SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic โ Following a four-goal first half, Haiti held on to take a 3-2 victory over Montserrat in Group B of League B of the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Mondy Prunier scored the opening goal in the fifth minute of the match to give Haiti the 1-0 lead. Prunier set himself up to score after receiving a ball with his chest from Derrick Etienne Jr.
Carnejy Antoine then extended the lead to 2-0 just four minutes later. The Haitian forward was alert to intercept a ball from the defense and drive into the box to score in the ninth minute.
Montserrat earned a chance to cut the deficit when forward Julian McDonald was dropped inside the box by Carlens Arcus. Adrian Cliftonโs penalty attempt was denied by Haiti GK Jhony Placide, but Kaleem Strawbridge was there to score from the rebound in the 19th minute.
Steeven Saba would recover the two-goal lead for Haiti in the 25th minute. A corner kick play was deflected by the defense, but a friendly touch set up the opportunity for Saba to score a screamer of a volley.
Haiti continued pressing high in the second half in search of extending their lead even further, and Dany Jean provided one of the first clear chances of the second half in the 61st minute.
Montserrat managed to pull a goal back on another penalty in the 90th minute when Brandon Barzey was taken down in the box by Ricardo Ade. Lyle Taylor blasted it past Placide to make it 3-2.ย
Despite the late surge from the visitors, Haiti held on until the final whistle, giving Haiti their first CNL win.
Haiti improves to 1-1-0 in this edition to solidify a larger stranglehold on second place and inch two points from first. Montserrat is 0-0-2 and looks to overturn a bad spell to fend off relegation.
